Names

The association is Persatuan Weiqi Malaysia in Bahasa Malaysia, Malaysia Weiqi Association in English, and 马来西亚围棋协会 in Chinese. The short form MWA is used on this site. The International Go Federation lists the member as Persatuan Weiqi Malaysia.

Two dates, kept distinct

A previous MWA website describes a group of Weiqi enthusiasts in Kuala Lumpur who, during the 1990s, began connecting people who liked to play, with the intention of forming an association that could consolidate and promote Weiqi in the country.

That same page, and the association’s Facebook introduction, state that Malaysia Weiqi Association (Persatuan Weiqi Malaysia) was formed in 2003, after support from players around the country and a period of preparation.

Separately, the International Go Federation’s Malaysia page lists Persatuan Weiqi Malaysia as a general member, affiliated in 1987. The IGF record does not fill in a founded year. The IGF directory email is kstiong@pd.jaring.my (labelled here as the IGF listing, not this site’s mailbox).

We do not flatten 1987 and 2003 into a single origin story. Affiliation in the IGF directory and the formation year published by the association are both on the public record; they answer different questions.

Registration

The society number used with the association is PPM-003-14-10122003. On the MWOC 2025 letterhead it is written without separators as PPM0031410122003. That letterhead is also the source for the Kinrara, Puchong office address and telephone on this site.

The 16 July 2013 About page listed the committee below. It is labelled previously published. This site does not present it as the current committee. For present officers, write to admin@weiqi.org.my.

The 2004 /about.html page

The December 2004 static site at /about.html is titled “About Weiqi”. It describes the game (board, stones, surrounding territory). It does not state a formation year for the association, and it is not used here to collapse 1987 and 2003.

What this site is

weiqi.org.my is the public website of Persatuan Weiqi Malaysia / Malaysia Weiqi Association. Contact for this site remains admin@weiqi.org.my. The Facebook page PersatuanWeiqiMalaysia is live and lists this domain. The yellow stones mark in the header is the association’s 2012 banner, recovered from the old WordPress uploads via the Wayback Machine — not a redrawn 围 seal.

A separate organisation

Malaysia Weiqi Sport Association / Persatuan Sukan Weiqi Malaysia (MWSA) is a different body, registered in August 2020 with the Commissioner of Sports Malaysia (K-PRK-10298). It publishes ranking and examination information on its own site. This domain is not MWSA. weiqisport.com.my
